Dr. Chan is one of the leaders in South Florida in outpatient hip and knee replacement performed in an ambulatory surgical center. He was the first in Broward County to perform a direct anterior approach hip replacement in an ASC and remains the highest volume ASC hip and knee replacement surgeon in Broward or Dade County. Patients are up and walking within an hour of surgery and can be discharged home within two hours of surgery. Dr. Chan has been recognized by Becker’s ASC Review as one of “10 ASC Total Joint Surgeons to Know” and his outpatient joint replacement program at Cypress Creek Outpatient Surgical Center is only one of six centers nationwide where other surgeons can bring their teams to learn about same-day hip and knee replacement to bring to their facilities.

Becker’s ASC Review

Dr. Chan was recently recognized by Becker’s ASC Review, a national ASC news and information resource, for being one of 10 ASC total joint surgeons to know and the only surgeon in the state of Florida with this distinction.

ASC Preceptorships

Dr. Chan, through a collaboration with DePuy, has made Cypress Creek Outpatient Surgical Center one of only six centers across the country as a preceptor site where other surgeons can bring their entire team to learn about how to successfully implement outpatient hip and knee replacement at their facilities. Dr. Chan also routinely hosts outside surgeons at the facility to teach advanced surgical techniques such as muscle-sparing direct anterior approach hip replacement surgery.

International / Self-Pay Patients

Dr. Chan’s reputation for delivering excellent clinical results for patients undergoing both hip and knee replacement as well as for fracture reconstruction reaches far beyond South Florida. We are accommodating increasing numbers of patients who travel from abroad, especially from Canada as well as Central / South America to have surgery with Dr. Chan at Cypress Creek Outpatient Surgical Center. Many of these patients already spend a significant amount of time in South Florida which facilitates a same-day discharge to their secondary residence locally while they get a jump start on their rapid recovery. With wait times for elective surgery exceeding well over a year in Canada, Dr. Chan has been able to expedite patients suffering with longstanding hip and knee pain to have their joint replacement within a matter of weeks of initial consultation. For patients coming from other areas where access to top notch medical care utilizing the latest techniques and technology may be challenging, Dr. Chan has been able to offer outpatient hip and knee replacement with advanced modalities such as computer navigation and robotic assistance that equals or exceeds that of any major academic hospital.

For interested patients, an initial consultation can be set up for an in-office appointment or via Telehealth if so desired. Prospective patients are encouraged to send imaging studies either by e-mail, direct mailing of a CD / USB, or by uploading images via our patient portal (https://app.mymedicalimages.com/fupi/danielchanortho). Typically we require basic laboratory studies (CBC – complete blood count, BMP – basic metabolic panel / electrolytes, and a urinalysis) for surgical clearance as well as an EKG for patients over 60 or with pre-existing cardiac issues. Also for patients over 60, we also require a clearance note from your medical doctor outlining your general medical condition and ability to undergo surgery. These can all be sent electronically to our office if done within 30 days of surgery. Alternatively, we can also arrange to have pre-surgical testing done locally with enough advance notice.

We charge a single, all-inclusive fee for the entire episode of care, which includes pre-op consultation, x-rays in the office if a live visit is conducted, surgeon fee, surgical center facility fee, anesthesia, joint replacement implants, and 90 days of post-op care. Please e-mail [javascript protected email address] for additional details regarding pricing. The fee does not include any post-operative physical therapy but this can be arranged with our own physical therapy facility on-site or with an outside agency of the patient’s choosing. We will provide a detailed brochure of post-operative exercises that patients can commence on their own immediately after surgery.

On the day of surgery, expect to come to the surgery center relatively early in the morning (06:00 AM). As such, we recommend most patients arrive in town the night before if they have an early morning surgical time. Surgery itself takes about 45 minutes for hip replacement and an hour for knee replacement. Patients are usually walking within an hour of surgery with assistance in the recovery area and can be discharged from the surgical center in less than two hours following surgery. Upon discharge, we recommend patients recover in spacious accommodations that allow for easy maneuvering with a rolling walker, a relatively low-lying bed, easy access to the restroom, and comfortable reclining seating. Activities will be as tolerated, meaning patients can attempt any physical activity they feel comfortable trying immediately after surgery without fear of damaging their new hip or knee joint. We do not have any restrictions on travel – patients can fly as soon as they feel they can comfortably navigate the airport and sit for the duration of the flight. Dr. Chan will always be available for questions via e-mail or via the MyChart patient portal and the office is always accessible by phone. Our aim is to provide the most seamless, concierge-like experience while also providing the highest level of care possible so that our patients can regain their independence and an active lifestyle.
